Finding New Ways of Coaching Kids

Over the last seven weeks we haven’t been able to run YFCHL (Youth For Christ Hockey League) because of the government restrictions that halted organized sports. This was extremely discouraging as we feel like we have been having a great year with lots of momentum and relationships with kids being built and deepened. However, we are finding new and exciting opportunities, we are trying new things and adapting to the climate and context we find ourself in.

Because the government still allows practices of up to 8 athletes (plus coaches), we decided it would be a great for us to run our own practices. These kids rarely have adults pouring into their lives and providing positive influence, so these nights are super siginficant. So far we have been able to run a goalie clinic, girls only night, and a defence clinic. It has been incredible that we have been able to give these kids the one on one attention that they so desperately crave. Almost all of the kids in our program have never received hockey specific skill training, so it is so great to be able to bless these kids with this.

On our special girls only night, Evan and I brought our wonderful wives who have never played hockey to do the drills with the other girls. My wife Jenna and Evan’s wife Rebbeca helped build their self esteem as well as building on the relationships they’ve already started with these girls.

Rebbeca also gave the girls a message of HOPE which they rarely get. Overall, we have had the amazing opportunity to bless, honour and value these girls who are part of our league.

We get to share the love and HOPE of Jesus through the experience of hockey, teamwork and positive adult mentorship in a safe community. We are so thankful that even despite the restrictions, God is presenting new and exciting opportunities to BRING HOPE to kids who need it.
