Psalm 112

Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
    they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
    their righteousness endures forever;
    their horn will be lifted high in honor.

Uhm... Ouch.

They have no fear of bad news...? Uh...

No fear? None?

Well I guess fear is a form of worship... so...

But geez. Is this Hebrew exaggeration? Can I reason this away to ensure I don't have to follow this?

Or is Jesus really calling me to not fear bad news? Is the reaction I have to bad news actually a sign that my heart is slipping further and further away from Him...?

It would be easy to let this one slip away, just hyperbole from David here. Or we could pray the Spirit gives us courage.

I guess the question should be, what requires more faith? More trust in Jesus? More of Him and less of me? Believing it's an exaggeration, or testing it against my heart to see where my loyalties truly lie...

Some guy said something once about God not giving us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and self discipline.

Some guy.
